Do I Need To Do Anything Before My Home Inspection?

Short Answer: Yes. Home Inspectors do not lift or move anything. If we can't access it, or visually see it, we can't inspect it.

It's a good idea to prepare for the home inspection in advance if you don't want your inspector to miss anything.

Do I Need To Do Anything Before My Home Inspection?

So What Should I Do Before The Inspection?

Here is a list of some things you should do to ensure you receive a thorough and complete home inspection:

1 - Make sure all areas and doors are unlocked or open, and easily accessible. This includes but is not limited to garage doors, attic doors, crawlspace/basement doors, utility closets for access to the furnace and water heater, sink cabinets, shut-off valves, and the breaker box.

2 - Move all furniture away from walls, entryways, and electrical outlets.

3 - Any debris, or stacked items need to be stored away from any of the home's components that need to be inspected.

4 - Replace all lightbulbs to avoid a "light does not work" report which can indicate an electrical issue.

5 - Fix missing or broken items in the home such as locks, doorknobs, screens, windowpanes, gutters, and chimney caps.

6 - Ensure that the utilities are all turned on i.e. water, electricity, and gas. Pilot lights should all be lit and burning.

7 - Make sure pets are put up and secured so they cannot hinder the inspection.

8 - Remove all stacked wood and debris near the foundation to avoid a report of conditions conducive to wood-destroying insects.

9 - Trim tree limbs so they aren't obstructing any utility lines. Trim shrubs 1 foot away from the house to prevent obstruction and other possible hazards.
